This Week in History

On November 9, 2006, the Trans-Siberian Orchestra came to Philips Arena. This rock orchestra group is best known for their renditions of traditional Christmas songs. Their name was inspired by the Trans-Siberian Railway in Russia, which, like music, connects many different cultures. Their live performances are known to have elaborate staging that can take up to fifteen hours to set up!

With hits like “I Believe”, “You Are the Sunshine of My Life”, “Ribbon in the Sky”, and “I Just Called to Say I Love You”, it was no wonder why fans were on their feet for Stevie Wonder’s November 1, 2007 performance at Philips Arena. His A Wonder Summer’s Night was his first US tour in over 10 years. Wonder has recorded more than 30 Top 10 hits, and he has won 25 Grammy Awards (plus one for lifetime achievement). He has also been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

Bette Midler’s fifteenth career tour brought her to Philips Arena on October 19, 1999. Her 1999 The Divine Miss Millennium Tour was a reinvention of her 1973 The Divine Miss M Tour, which was driven by her fan-inspired nickname “The Divine Miss M”. Bette Midler has won four Grammy Awards, 3 Emmy Awards, a Tony Award, and 2 Academy Award nominations. In 2001, Bette published a book chronicling this 1999 tour entitled “Bette or Bust”.

For the second time in 2000, Philips Arena welcomed Tina Turner to the stage on October 14, 2000. This 2000 “Twenty Four Seven Tour” was named the highest growing tour of 2000 by Pollstar Magazine, and is the fifth highest grossing tour in America ever. The “Queen of Rock and Roll” has earned 8 Grammy Awards, 7 Billboard Top 10 Singles, and 16 US Top R&B Singles. She is also on the Rolling Stone’s list The Immortals—The Greatest Artists of All Time. In addition, Tina Turner holds the record for most concert tickets sold by a solo performer ever.

This Week in History

American band R.E.M. came to Philips Arena on October 11, 2003. These alternative rockers met in Athens, Georgia. In fact, R.E.M. members still like to give money to local charities and environmental endeavors. Earlier in 2003, Warner Bros released the compilation album In Time: The Best of R.E.M. 1998-2003, upon which the band based their tour.
