Philips Arena Artists Give Back

With the decreasing temperature, changing leaves and holiday season swiftly approaching, Philips Arena can not help but get excited for the arrival of Thanksgiving! Thanksgiving is a time not only for turkey and stuffing but sharing and giving back. While their genres vary, Elton John and Robin Thicke share the common denominator of philanthropy and charity work. Let’s dig a little deeper into what they are doing to help their communities:

Sir Elton John, one of the most well respected artists of all time with over 300 million albums sold worldwide throughout the course of his career, is never hesitant to lend a helping hand. Elton John created the Elton John AIDS Foundation in 1992 after untimely deaths of a couple of his dear friends. According to the organization’s website the charity focuses on “empowering people infected, affected and at risk of HIV/AIDS, alleviating their physical, emotional and financial hardship, and improving their quality of life by enabling them to live with dignity and exercise self-determination.”  Elton John continues to receive award after award for his contributions to the community affected with HIV and AIDS. On October 30, Sir Elton John received his most recent award, The Rockefeller Lifetime Achievement Award.  The Rockefeller Foundation's Lifetime Achievement Award is “given annually to an outstanding individual who has implemented major innovative approaches to social or environmental problems.” Past recipients include President Bill Clinton and Ratan Tata!

Robin Thicke has contributed many of his efforts to charities. Thicke has been seen topping Billboard charts and more recently taking the VMA stage with global icon Miley Cyrus, but rarely will one hear about his work with the various charities he supports. This year, Robin Thicke is an ambassador of the Gentlemen’s Fund Initiative, an organization that “raises awareness to issues essential to modern men.”  Through this organization, Thicke headlined the Gentlemen Give Back Concert which donated 50 percent of each ticket sold to one of four charities. Robin Thicke has also teamed up with Tickets for Charity. On February 21, he will begin a small tour in which a portion of each ticket sale will benefit great causes like St. Jude Children’s Hospital!

Now that we know little bit more about what celebrities are doing to lend a hand this holiday season, let us know what you are doing to give back this Thanksgiving!

Visit www.PhilipsArena.com for a full list of upcoming events, and be sure to check out Elton John and Robin Thicke when they are at Philips Arena!

Join A Luau With Lilo & Stitch at Disney On Ice Presents "Let's Celebrate!"

We are delighted to welcome back Disney On Ice Presents: “Let’s Celebrate!” to Philips Arena this week! Come join us as we travel the world with all of our favorite Disney friends celebrating holidays, festivals, and more! Visit a winter wonderland with Mickey and Minnie, go on a Halloween hunt with Disney villains, attend the royal ball with the princesses, and have a very merry unbirthday with Alice and the Madhatter, along with some additional surprises!

Also joining the celebration this year is Lilo and her faithful “dog” Stitch! To help us prepare for our luau with them, we wanted to take a look into Hawaiian culture and learn a little bit more about the festivity native to Lilo’s hometown.

On the show Lilo and Stitch and in Lilo and Stitch: The Movie you will often see Lilo and her family participating in luaus. A luau is a Hawaiian party or feast that features traditional foods, dancing, and entertainment! The luau originated in Hawaii and was once a celebration for the royal. Enormous amounts of food was prepared and enjoyed only by the rich and powerful on the island. The name “luau” comes from one of the most popular dishes featured at these celebrations. It includes leaves and taro plants combined with chicken and baked in coconut milk.

Dancing is also a large part of Lilo’s world and an important feature of modern day luaus. Originating in Hawaii, hula is cultural dance performed predominately by women at luaus. Hula features flowing hand and hip movements and is traditionally performed to ukulele or similar music.

Now that you know a little about luaus throw on your hula skirts and come celebrate with Lilo and Stitch at Philips Arena during Disney on Ice Presents “Let’s Celebrate!”

Tickets are still available, so buy yours today to join the celebration!
