Van Halen, Rock And Roll Hall of Fame inductees and one of the most important and influential rock bands of all time, announced their return to the live stage with an extraordinary 2012 North American tour. The band will perform here at Philips Arena on April 19, with special guests Kool & The Gang. Tickets for this legendary event go on sale January 28 at 10AM through Ticketmaster.com, charge by phone 800-745-3000, and the Philips Arena Box Office.

Van Halen also announced that their new album, A Different Kind Of Truth, will be released in the U.S. by Interscope Records on February 7. The first single from the album, "Tattoo", and its accompanying video debuted yesterday, Tuesday, January 10.

Inspiration - Sanctus Real

USA Today recently published a story on Matt Hammitt, the lead singer of Christian rock band Sanctus Real, who will be performing at Winter Jam 2012 on January 15 at Philips Arena. Check out the inspiring story below:

Told that his unborn son had only half a heart and little chance to survive, the lead singer of the Christian rock band Sanctus Real began pouring his fears and doubts into music. The songs were meant to comfort his family while they searched for answers and sought to understand God's role during the months before and after the baby's birth that were filled with surgeries and life-threatening complications.

It didn't take long for him to realize that his words needed to be shared so that others struggling with life would know they're not alone. What came out of the heartache was Every Falling Tear, a solo album that's meant to touch and console during the hardest of times.

"People want to know that their pain has a purpose," said Matt Hammitt, one of the founding members of Sanctus Real, a band with two Grammy-nominated albums since 2008. "That's the biggest part of sharing our story," he said. "That there is a purpose."

Hammitt and his wife, Sarah, knew something was wrong minutes after finding out during an ultrasound in April 2010 that their third child would be a boy, following two girls. They saw the sorrow on their doctor's face even before she spoke.

Doctors later confirmed the baby had a rare congenital heart defect called hypoplastic left heart syndrome, which causes the left side of the heart to be severely underdeveloped. For five months, the couple contemplated all of the possible procedures and treatments while weighing the odds of what could go wrong. Their baby would face multiple surgeries and an uncertain future at best.

They also didn't know how to deal with a flood of emotions — the anger, the doubt, the feeling of being alone. Hammitt, 32, decided he needed to tell God how he was feeling, so he started writing songs about their journey.

"I began writing about all that I was learning about struggle and faith," he said.

Each song tells of a moment or a series of events leading to the baby's birth — there's a father's fear of holding back his love for a son he may never know and a mother's hope of finding peace in the midst of despair.

"I wanted to write songs that would speak him someday about how much his father loved him no matter how long or short his life would be," Hammitt said, his voice trailing off.

Sanctus Real will be one of nearly a dozen Christian artists taking part in the Winter Jam tour that starts in January, with stops in 47 cities. The tour comes to Philips Arena on January 15 at 6pm. For details, click here.

Rammstein - Made in Germany 1995 - 2011

As Rammstein celebrates the release of their first retrospective album, Made in Germany 1995 - 2011, guitarist Paul Landers hints at what fans can expect from the stage savvy band's forthcoming North American tour, which stops at Philips Arena on April 23.

"It's always a major challenge for us to build a new show," explains Landers. "It starts with a tiny crew and ends up with 23 trucks. We do try to keep it minimal, but it always becomes more rather than less. It's not our fault, we're natural show-offs."

Rammstein has become known the world over for their incendiary and decadent live performances. Fans by the tens of thousands regularly fill arenas and stadiums to take part in what is a wholly unique experience that blends the band's bombastic music with a pyrotechnic-laden, rock music wonderland. The Los Angeles Times smartly described a Rammstein show as "... epic stagecraft on a Wagnerian scale, several notches up from most arena rock."

We are thrilled to announce the plans for our first-of-its kind new restaurant – RED! In collaboration with The Johnson Studio, Buckhead Life Restaurant Group, and Levy Restaurants, the new $2-million restaurant will be open for Hawks games and other events in February 2012. Three key design elements were incorporated to make RED’s dining experience unique to Atlanta and to the arena and stadium industry at large. They include:

· Tiered level seating within the restaurant and bar space allowing for optimal visibility of the court from inside

· Terraced sit-down dining accommodations within the Arena seating bowl providing for a premium view of the action on the floor

· A centrally located show kitchen for guests to enjoy the excitement of chefs preparing meals

“The restaurant sort of evolved from what we realized was a growing need for a sit down dining experience for our nonpremium customers,” said Ailey Penningroth, vice president, brand strategy and corporate communications, Atlanta Hawks and Philips Arena. Penningroth explained that client feedback was the motivation to start thinking about creating a new dining experience.

The Johnson Studio, a local design firm, is designing the 250-seat, 10,000-sq.-ft. space, which used to be occupied by a restaurant called Headlines Bar and Grill. While many venues provide loge seating, the new restaurant will feature the three key design features mentioned above to accommodate our guests. We removed seven rows of regular seating, or 400 seats, in order to make room for the restaurant.

The menu will feature some venue favorites as well as new items. “There are probably only 30 percent of the items that you would find elsewhere in the venue. We wanted to create a menu that was appealing to a broad range of people, because when you’ve got 20,000 guests, you’ve got a lot of tastes and palates,” said Penningroth. “We wanted this to be inviting to everybody. Everyone from a couple going out on a date to a family coming out with their kids, to a businessperson bringing a client.” Some signature items include a crab cake BLT, lollipop chicken wings, a signature burger, and pizza.

RED will open 90 minutes before Hawks games, concerts, and other events, and we plan to keep the restaurant open an hour to 90 minutes after events close, depending on traffic.

The Basket:
- A regulation 10' basketball hoop and regulation size rim (18 in. (45.72cm) in diameter)

The Basketball:
- A regulation size basketball (9 in. (22.86cm) in diameter)

The Court:
- Must be considered an everyday place to play basketball. (driveway, street).
- Automatic disqualification will occur if the court used in the entry is a location that a basketball game would not normally occur (the woods, in a pool, etc...).

The Shot:
- "The Basketball" must be made into "The Basket" from anywhere on "The Court" or within a 15' perimeter
of "The Court".

Modifiers:
- Shot type modifiers - shooting (Hook shot, backwards, granny style) are accepted, but must be called on "The Video" before the shot was made.
- Shot type modifiers - making (bank/glass, swish/nothing but net, off the wall) are accepted, but must be called on "The Video" before the shot was made.

Automatic disqualification will occur if a prop is used in any way at any time before the shot, during the shot, or after the shot. Using a wall to redirect the basketball, but it must be a non-movable wall, otherwise it might be considered a prop and the entry will be disqualified.

1. Must be one continuous video and the ball must remain in frame the entire video.
2. Must be specifically created for this contest.
3. What were you doing this time four years ago? We were kicking it with Beyonce and Robin Thicke when The Beyonce Experience tour stopped at Philips Arena on July 20, 2007. This tour was in support of Beyonce's second solo album, B'Day. She opened the sold out show with "Crazy in Love" and performed favorites such as "Naughty Girl," "Dangerously in Love," and "Irreplaceable."

Beyonce released her first solo album in 2003 and earned five Grammy Awards. Since her debut, she has continued producing record-breaking albums and has established herself as one of the most influential celebrities in the world.

This time last year, June 20, 2010 the Class of 2010 University of Phoenix Atlanta Campus commencement ceremony took place at Philips Arena at 2:00pm. This is a great example of the diversity of events held throughout the year at Philips Arena. Not only do we host a variety of concerts, sporting events, and family shows - we also host conferences, meetings, and ceremonies.

Students, alumni, faculty, staff, friends, and family packed the house. Victor Antonio was the keynote speaker and delivered a motivating speech to the crowd. You can watch parts of his speech and interviews here:

Birthday Bash has become one of Atlanta's hottest summer concerts showcasing some of the greatest names in Hip Hop and featuring the "who's who" of Atlanta. The Birthday Bash tradition started at Philips Arena in 2006 and has grown bigger and better every year since.

This week last year Philips Arena hosted Grammy Award winning superstar Maxwell for two nights - June 11 and 12. Special guest Erykah Badu joined Maxwell on the first night in Atlanta and Jill Scott joined for the second night.

Maxwell's 2010 Tour was in support of his fourth studio album, BLACKsummers'night. He released this album after taking several years off from the music industry. Maxwell came back from his break to receive six nominations for the 2010 Grammy Awards and won two of the nominations - "Best R&B Album" for BLACKsummers'night and "Best Male R&B Vocal Performance" for "Pretty Wings." "Pretty Wings" was nominated for the "Song of the Year" which was written by Maxwell under his publishing moniker Musze.

May 22, 2007 Roger Waters, co-founder and principal songwriter of the archetypal progressive rock band Pink Floyd, performed the epic rock masterpiece, "The Dark Side Of The Moon" at Philips Arena. A fun fact about this tour is that on opening night (September 6, 2006) of the tour, Pink Floyd's iconic pig was introduced to fans, and has been at every appearance since. The set list remained constant throughout the tour - the first set was a collection of Pink Floyd material and songs from Roger's solo career, and the second The Dark Side of the Moon in its entirety, plus encores.

May 17, 2008 Katt Williams brought his "It's Pimpin' Pimpin' Exclusive Tour" to Philips Arena. Katt Williams is known for his quick wit and animated performances in several television shows like Wild’n’Out, HBO specials such as Def Comedy Jam and Pimp Chronicles Pt. 1, and films Friday After Next and American Hustler. Katt Williams put on a successful show and entertained the crowd at Philips Arena.

NBA Playoffs

This time last year the Atlanta Hawks moved on to round two of the NBA Playoffs after beating Milwaukee in the first round. The Hawks ran into a hot Orlando Magic squad in round two and suffered a 4-0 sweep in the Conference Semifinals.

This year, the Hawks faced the Magic in round one and had the chance to settle the score. The Hawks sent the Magic back to Orlando after beating them 84 to 81 in game six at the Highlight Factory.

The Hawks face the Bulls tonight in Chicago for game 1 of round two. Games 3 and 4 of the series will be played in Atlanta this week on Wednesday and Sunday. Philips Arena was packed on the evening of April 25, 2003, as Cher’s adoring fans clamored for one last chance to see thee pop diva live as she continued on her “Living Proof: Farewell Tour”. Although this tour is known for its longevity, on this night Cher’s fans relished the unique moments that made up this spectacular farewell show. Over the years Cher has defied age as she continued to not only stand out amongst her younger peers, but be a leader for them. With her glittering costumes and superb vocals, Cher proved why this was the most successful tour by any female artist. The performance delighted both old fans and new ones alike with clips of music videos and life performances from years past and songs from her new album, Living Proof. As Cher concluded the show by singing “Believe”, she said farewell to adoring Atlanta fans for the last time.

This show delighted both country and pop fans alike, as she sang many upbeat and catchy songs like the album’s top 10 country hit, “I’m Gonna Getcha Good.” With a circular stage, Shania was able to reach out to all her fans and keep them on their feet throughout the show. Up! topped both The Billboard 200 and Country Albums Chart, proving that Shania was back where she belonged with her follow up to the incredibly successful Come On Over.

On April 12, 2000, two living legends took the stage at Philips Arena. Joined by special guest Lionel Richie, Tina Turner proved why she truly is a rock a legend. At the age of 60 and with over 40 years of performing and producing hits in the music business, Tina still knew how to put on a show that would surprise and delight her fans. Billed as her farewell tour, Ms. Turner’s “Twenty-Four Seven Millennium Tour” included material from her new album, Twenty-Four Seven, as well as some of her greatest hits. Her modern looking stage morphed into a volcano like shape that split to reveal Tina herself singing “I heard it through the grapevine”, with a red flame in the background. The highest grossing tour in North America in 2000 also featured special guest Lionel Richie, singing his bevy of hits including songs from his new album Renaissance.

11Alive Teams Up with Barney for Random Acts of Kindness

Students at the Primrose Pre-school in Dunwoody got a surprise visit this morning from very special guest – Barney! As part of 11Alive’s Random Acts of Kindness, Nina Brown teamed up with Barney to present the children with free tickets to attend Barney’s Birthday Bash at Philips Arena tomorrow, April 7.

The students excitedly ran into the classroom and jumped up and down as soon as they saw their favorite purple dinosaur waiting for them. Ms. Brown presented the children with the Barney tickets and explained the Random Act of Kindness program. They were all very excited about the tickets and agreed to do something kind for someone else in return. It was great to see how enthused the students were about Barney and their appreciation for the gift and their desire to support their community. This is something these children won’t forget!

On April 9, 2004, one of rock’s greatest bands of all time brought their act to Philips Arena. As part of the Honkin’ on Bobo Tour, Aerosmith played some of their new music mixed with classic hits. Even though they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001 and had been touring together for over 20 years, Aerosmith proved on this night that they still knew how to rock, even with a blues album. The set was vintage Aerosmith down to, current American Idol judge, Steven Tyler’s dance moves and the show’s final song of the night, “Walk this Way”.

On this date in 2004, four of the leading ladies of pop and R&B, took the stage at Philips Arena. The Verizon First Ladies Tour featured incredible star power with Tamia, Missy Elliott, Alicia Keys and Beyoncé. With a multitude of awards and #1 hits among them, these four ladies certainly did not disappoint. Tamia kicked off the show, followed by Missy Elliott who proved why she is the first lady of hip-hop, by performing her hits like “Get Ur Freak on” and “Work It”. Then came Alicia Keys with a more soulful set as she belted out songs from both Songs in A Minor and her new album, The Diary of Alicia Keys. Last, but certainly not least, Beyoncé closed out the show with a performance fit for a queen. After entering the stage in a white chariot, she kept the crowd moving until she ended the show with her #1 single “Crazy in Love”. While this marked Beyoncé’s first tour as a solo artist, she did make Destiny’s Child fans proud, singing a medley of the group’s hits.

Following Santana’s incredibly successful Supernatural, Shaman debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 chart. While the performance did feature songs from the new album, Santana also sang some of his greatest hits, like “Maria Maria” and “Oye Como Va”. The album also featured multiple collaborations, with the likes of Michelle Branch, Chad Kroeger and Seal. However, on this night, Carlos Santana proved why he alone was named one of Rolling Stone magazine’s “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time”.

On this date, just two years ago, “the most successful and longest-running concert duo in history” brought their act to Philips Arena. Music legends Billy Joel and Elton John continued their Face 2 Face tour in 2009 with an amazing performance in Atlanta. The show began with a series of duets, with each singer on his own piano. As the concert continued, Elton and Billy performed separately, and then reunited for the grand finale all while performing some of their greatest hits. Even though these two rock legends have been coming together for the Face to Face tour since 1994, fifteen years later, their show remained strong as ever. The crowd was treated to a night of great music, by two talented friends.

On March 5, 2009, Britney Spears brought the Circus to Philips Arena. During her fifth concert tour, the pop star pulled out all the stops. Along with special guest, The Pussycat Dolls, Britney made sure that the sold out crow did not leave disappointed. The show felt like a circus, with its three-ring stage, acrobats, jugglers and Britney as the ringmaster. The concert was divided into four acts, “Circus”, “House of Fun”, “Freekshow/Peepshow” and “Electro Circ”. While the concert mainly included music from Britney's most recent albums, it also a remix of her hit “…Baby One More Time”. The Circus starring Britney Spears was fifth highest grossing tour of 2009.

During his third solo tour, Justin Timberlake made a stop at Philips Arena on February 27, 2007. Along with special guest Pink, Timberlake proved that he is a forced to be reckoned with in the music business. As a special surprise in Atlanta, Justin was also joined on stage by hometown favorite, T.I. to perform “My Love”. On music’s biggest night, some of our hometown favorites shined brightest. At last night’s Grammy Awards, Usher took home the award for Best R&B Male Vocal Performance, and joined his protégé, Justin Bieber, on stage for a special performance. Both singers wowed crowds at Philips Arena back in December and last night’s show was no different. Another Georgia native, Cee Lo Green, rocked the stage performing his hit “Forget You” with the help of Gwyneth Paltrow. Lady Antebellum, with Augusta natives Charles Kelley and Dave Haywood, also gave Georgia reason to cheer as one of the biggest winners of the night, winning the awards for Record and Song of the Year for their hit “Need You Now”.

On February 8, 2006, one of the greatest rock’n’ roll bands of all time took the stage at Philips Arena. Touring in support of their album, A Bigger Bang, The Rolling Stones opened their Atlanta show with fireworks and the sound of “Start Me Up”. In addition to many classic hits, The Stones’ gave an enthusiastic crowd a look at some songs from their new album, such as “Rain Fall Down”. The band brought all of their energy to this show, especially Mick Jagger with his age defying dance moves. However, this was just one amazing night that was part of a tour that sold over 4,500,000 tickets to fans in 118 different cities and left each one wanting more.

On January 31, 2010, WWE held its 23rd annual Royal Rumble Event at Philips Arena. The marquee event, the Royal Rumble Match, featured a total of 30 wrestlers from Raw, SmackDown and ECW brands. In this year’s match, Edge claimed victory by outlasting all other challengers in his surprise return to competition. As the winner, Edge earned the right to compete for a world title at Wrestlemania XXVI.

WWE returns to Philips Arena later this year with two exciting events: WWE Hall of Fame on Saturday, April 2nd and Monday Night Raw on Monday, April 4th. We hope to see you there!

Back on January 29, 2000, Atlanta’s hometown favorite, TLC, took the stage at Philips Arena for the final stop on their “FanMail Tour”. TLC belted out multiple #1 hits, including Waterfalls, Unpretty and concluded with the extremely popular, No Scrubs. As part of their final show, T-Boz, Left Eye and Chilli were joined on stage by special guest Goodie Mob to perform “What it Ain’t”.

TLC received incredible support from their hometown fans, including Atlanta Mayor Bill Campbell. He awarded each member a key to the city and named the day of the concert “TLC Day”.

This week in history Philips Arena welcomed Celine Dion’s Taking Chances Tour. Celine graced the stage at Philips Arena on Saturday, January 17, 2009. This tour was significant as it marked Celine’s return after performing her “A New Day…” show in Las Vegas for five years. The tour was said to be the second highest grossing tours of all time by a solo artist.

Celine performed some of her old hits as well as new songs from her “Taking Chances” album which she released in November 2007. The show was two hours, broken into four segments – soul, rock, Middle-Eastern, and fashion-victim. The crowd was treated to an inspiring performance including unique elements of videos, dancing, and innovating lighting.

Two years ago, to this week, the Hawks went on a 6 game winning streak with 5 straight wins at home in Philips Arena. On December 19, 2008, the Hawks began their streak by beating the Golden State Warriors 115 to 99 at home. The Hawks came off that win to defeat the Detroit Pistons, Oklahoma City Thunder, Chicago Bulls, and the Denver Nuggets with the home court advantage. After the huge wins in a row at home, Joe Johnson and the Hawks went to Indiana to beat the Pacers 110-104 on December 30th.

This Monday, the Hawks defeated their division rivals, the Orlando Magic, 91-81 at home. Come cheer on the Hawks to another winning streak this year starting now. With many Disney characters, including Mickey, Minnie, and Goofy, Disney Live! Mickey’s Rockin’ Road Show made a pit stop at Philips Arena during their road trip last year on December 20th. Audiences got to sing along with Cinderella, bounce with Tigger, and join Woody, Jessie and Buzz Lightyear for a fun hoedown.

This December, Disney Live! Mickey’s Magic Show is going to be live at Philips Arena on the 19th. Your favorite characters are in town again, but this time for a magic show! The audience will get to watch magic performed right in front of their own eyes. Kids get to see Cinderella, Jasmine, brooms from Fantasia, Alice and the Mad Hatter along with their favorite characters, Mickey, Minnie, Donald, and Goofy.

On December 10, 2002, Philips Arena hosted the WWE SmackDown. WWE SmackDown started in April of 1999. A few years later in 2002, WWE decided to do some brand extension and came up with WWE Raw. WWE wanted to split SmackDown into two separate rosters, storylines, and figures to rival each other.

About eight years later, still with all the excitement and action, Atlanta will host the extension, WWE Raw on April 4th. This will be the first Monday Night Raw after the Wrestlemania 27 held in Atlanta at the Georgia Dome. Come see the superstar champions such as The Miz, Daniel Bryan, Santino Marella, and Vladimir Kozlov. Tickets go on sale for general public on Saturday, December 11th at 10 AM for WWE Raw at Philips Arena through Ticketmaster.

Last year on November 29th, Miley Cyrus performed live at Philips Arena. Her Wonderful World Tour promoted her albums, Breakout and Time of Our Lives.

Ticketmaster used Miley's tour as a huge experiment in paperless ticketing. This went into effect to try to limit the amount of ticket scalping. As a part of an "official paperless tour," all tickets were sold through paperless ticket delivery. This meant that all fans attending the show were not given a physical ticket to enter Philips Arena or other venues. Instead, fans were required to bring the credit card the tickets were purchased with along with a photo ID. Then, at the doors, fans recieved a seat locater slip telling where to sit.

Also trying the paperless tour is Justin Bieber's My World Tour. Some paperless tickets were issued for Bieber's stop at Philips Arena on December 23rd.

On November 24th, 1999, the Backstreet Boys performed live during the inaugural year of Philips Arena. The “Into the Millennium” Tour occurred after the release of their hit album, “Millennium” that May. “Millennium” was the best selling album in the US in 1999 selling almost 9.5 million copies.

Last night on November 21st, at the American Music Awards, the show went back old school with performances by Bush with Carlos Santana, Bon Jovi, and New Kids on the Block along with the Backstreet Boys. The two bands performed for the first time with the name NKOTBSB. Together they performed a mash up of their hit songs which included, “Everybody,” “The Right Stuff,” “Step By Step,” and two songs form the “Millennium” album, “I Want It That Way” and “Larger Than Life.”

With NKOTBSB being 9 strong, they are working on their new tour now! They will stop in Atlanta at Philips Arena on June 22, 2011. Tickets will go one sale December 11th!

Known as the world’s highest earning musicians in 2008, The Police performed at Philips Arena on November 17-18, 2007 for the reuniting tour after their breakup in 1984. The tour was the 30th anniversary of their hit single “Roxanne.” The English band, composed of Sting, Andy Summers, and Stewart Copeland, formed in London in 1977. Their music was influenced by Jazz, Punk, and Reggae.

Another English band that started in London’s underground music scene about 12 years earlier was Pink Floyd. However, Pink Floyd is known for psychedelic and progressive rock. The principal song -writer of Pink Floyd, Roger Waters, will be live at Philips Arena this Thursday, November 18th. He will be celebrating the 30th anniversary of the original release of The Wall. Waters will be performing the entire album during this monumental tour.

This week in 2002, Philips Arena was lucky enough to host one of Tony Hawk’s Boom Boom HuckJam events. Being the first show of its kind, Boom Boom HuckJam was packed with skateboarding, BMX, motocross, and live music from Good Charlotte. The show originated in Vegas before Tony Hawk decided to take the show on tour complete with an over a million dollar ramp.

On Saturday, February 5, 2011, Nuclear Cowboyz will perform live at Philips Arena. Nuclear Cowboyz is a freestyle motocross show full of gravity defying and fearless aerial feats. Composed of 20 shows in October and November 2006, Barbra Streisand toured the country for the first time in almost a decade. “Streisand: The Tour” performed live in Atlanta on November 2, 2006 with a variety of performances including from her 50th gold album, “Guilty Pleasures.” A main decision to return to the road was to donate proceeds to charity through The Streisand Foundation. Some tickets for the tour reached $750 and even more for VIP tickets! The total gross of the tour reached over $76 million. On Wednesday, October 28, 2009, the Hawks hosted their regular season home opener against the Indiana Pacers. The Hawks defeated the Pacers 120-109 with the help of Al Horford with 16 rebounds and Josh Smith with 8 assists.

This year, the Hawks’ home opener is this Saturday, October 30th. They are taking on the Washington Wizards at Philips Arena at 7:00 PM. It’s a new start for the Hawks and their new head coach, Larry Drew. Get your tickets now-

For the past two years during this week, Disney on Ice has performed at Philips Arena. In 2008, the show was Disney on Ice- Worlds of Fantasy. Worlds of Fantasy consisted of scenes from the Little Mermaid, Lion King, Cars and Tinker Bell. Known as “One Big Colossal on Ice,” the next year’s show was Let’s Celebrate packed with a winter wonderland, Halloween haunt with some notorious villains, a “very merry unbirthday,” and a ball with the Disney Princesses. The Disney on Ice show for this year was a production from the 2010 Disney-Pixar movie, Toy Story 3. Buzz and Woody, along with the whole gang, stopped in Atlanta this past weekend for an entertaining show full with tons of new characters.
